Tools for assembling gundam

When I turned, he saw the Anime Boston Staff logo on the back on my shirt. Not much of a discount, but it was enough for me to justify buying it anyway. It took me four hours to put my Gundam together. Now, she sits on the bookshelf in all her gleaming titanium and florescent pink glory. My Gundams mean more to me than a figure ever will. Gundam modeling has become my unlikely but enjoyable new hobby.

The only problem is how tough it was to break into it. Before you begin building, you need to learn a few things about the types of Gundam models out there. Gundams are classified in two ways: by grade and by scale. Grade refers not only to the level of mastery you will need in order to complete your Gundam, but the accuracy of the individual parts.

A Gundam of a very detailed grade will be most true to life, er, true to the way it looks on the show. Gundams generally come in several scales, based on how many of the model would fit inside an actual Gundam. The parts snap right off of the plastic runner and into place, no glue required.

However, you still might want to visit the craft store before you get started on your Gundam model. The cutters, usually used for putting jewelry together, are helpful for removing your parts from their plastic runners with more accuracy than just your fingers.

If you still do get excess plastic on the part, you can use an X-Acto knife to scrape it off. Fact: one of the pieces on this Gundam is superglued in. Mistakes can be fixed! The next step is to begin reading the instructions but, unless you know Japanese, I understand how that can be a bit daunting. After building three models, here are some of my tips:. Do you build Gundams? Thinking about it? Update: Wow, since this post went up, a lot of people have visited! Now I just miss having the workspace to do crafts with.

Like most 20 something women, Gundam Wing was my initiation into Gundam in the first place. I guess I was too busy looking at the cute boys to tell if any of the Gundams were that impressive. Hey, nice blog! I was hooked! Keep it up! Nice blog. I got started on actually building model kits just this month and have enjoyed doing it.

I have been a Gundam fan since i was 10 or 11, but I was intimidated in building these as I was lousy with my hands. Although its jumbled around, it gives more ideas to build them including spray paint, laquers, paneling, and sanding.

Brush a very thin layer of Future over any part you have painted, and the paint job becomes nearly indestructible. Okay, not really, but it will be more durable than not sealing the paint. However, keep in mind that Future will leave your paint with a gloss or semi-gloss finish, so I wouldn't do this on anything you want to have a matte finish.

There are paint sealers specifically made for plastic models, including matte finishers, but I never fool with them. Future is also acrylic, so cleaning up your brush is a snap. Hey, I just started Gundam modeling yesterday in fact , and just wanted to thank you for this post. You probably saved me ten years of learn-it-myself. You're welcome. I haven't really talked much about my Gundam model addiction here.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I remember when I first started building Gundams some ten or so years ago, I opened the box and thought "What did you get yourself into?

Well, that's the bad thing right now. A year, year and a half ago you could have walked into any Wal-Mart and bought it, but most Wal-Marts seem to have gotten rid of their modeling section. If you have a Hobby Lobby in your area, that's a good place to look. You can look in the yellow pages and look under "hobby stores," but just be aware that you're goint to pay more usually at a hobby store.

You can also buy them online, but I never do so I can't really point you in the right direction there. I would recommend you buy your paint in person at first. Keep a record of the colors you like a friend of mine used to keep a white posterboard and would paint a little splotch on it and write the color and brand next to it so he'd have a reference for how it looked. Then, if you want to buy some paint in bulk, maybe go online at that point. How much is the shipping from HLJ.

I'm not sure if you did explain the reason for putting the plastic bag under water. Thanks for the guide. Hmmmm, I'm not sure where I said to put a plastic bag under water. The only thing you should be putting in water are the parts trees, but of course you need to take them out of the plastic bag.

They display shipping prices right on the item's page, but its in yen. And now i cant take the foot out and fix it, will you help me? When i was building my first model: the gundam AGE-1 model, i did something terribly wrong: i put the polycap at the wrong durection.

I try to take it out but in vain. Will you pls help me? Post a Comment. I've been putting Gundam models together for close to 10 years. I don't claim to be an expert, but I've learned a lot through trial and error. When I started, I tried to find information out there to help me start, but most stuff assumed that the reader was already proficient in modeling, so I basically had to figure this out on my own.

I wanted to share some of my tips for you beginners. Of course, nothing works better than good old "experience. These techniques aren't just for Gundam models, you can apply this to most Bandai, mecha, and Japanese kits. NOTE: The current trend in some model kits is to have the joint actually contained within a "panel line" on the kit. A panel line is a recessed line on the surface of a model that simulates a panel, armor plate, or two separate pieces of metal.

Take a look here. All those black lines on the surface of the model are panel lines. If the gap between the two halves will be in a panel line, don't put cement here. You'll see why below. Take care not to get any cement on your fingers. You won't notice until you put your finger tip on another piece of plastic and it sticks to your finger. It will etch your fingerprint into the model's surface.
